I started off carpet cleaning as a employee in the apartment maintenance field. My boss called me in one day and said "Hey Randy, we are going to start cleaning carpets in house." I laughed and said "Great good luck with that!" and started to leave. He then said "Well what I meant to say was you are going to start cleaning carpet!!!" said " No way I am a maintenance man not a carpet cleaner" Remember I have never seen anything but apartment cleaners and this was in 1985. They were never on time. never charged what they said, and no uniforms. So time went on and I became a supervisor on call 24/7. One morning my wife goes "Randy you are spending to much time at work, the children and I never get to see you!" Well Honey that is part of the job. Off to work I go, where my regional manager is there. She starts with "Randy, we need more from you!" I am thinking well that can't happen.So I asked her of she knew anybody that wanted my ob, she said yes. So I told her I was done. I go home and tell my wife I will be home more. So know I have to think about getting to work. I decide to do carpet cleaning. I get a business card and get out and start to get work it is really hard. So I make a phone call and start getting apartment communities. I am thinking this is great I am making $50 a hour, way better then the $10 I was making as a Supervisor. Within a very short time though I realized I was broke. I hadn't figured on taxes, gas, travel, and insurances. My next step I went on to learn marketing, for in truth we are all marketers who happen to do carpet cleaning. I learned direct marketing. I don't have to clean for everybody nor do I want to. I had to identify my client, where they lived, what they made and more. Next I had to put systems into place to stay in touch, get repeat work, and get referrals. I wanted to be the best so I went and got more education and became a Master Textile Cleaner, Master Water Restorer, and Master Fire Restorer I wanted to specialize in cleaning for health. I built the company up and my son Shaun came on. He trained and started his path towards Master. Eventually he knew he wanted to take over. I was at a marketing event where they said come up with a 5 year plan and that's what I did with Shaun's purchase.CleanIt a book I wrote for Shaun as a guide. It did end up taking 6 years but without the plan it never would of happened. So as I trained him and started turning things over, I started learning about teaching and what it would take. I became a approved Instructor for the IICRC. Next I worked on becoming a coach so that I could teach, coach, and or consult.
